WhatsApp Business now charges you for every message

For almost two years, replying to a customer on WhatsApp cost businesses nothing. That ended on October 1, 2026. Meta now charges for many of the replies you send inside the 24-hour customer service window, including the ones your chatbot or AI agent sends.
The change does not hit every business the same way. This guide explains who pays, how the free allowance works, how to estimate your bill, and how to keep it low.

What Changed With WhatsApp Business Message Pricing

Two types of message that used to be free inside the 24-hour customer service window are now billable:

  • Service messages. Free-form replies to a customer who messaged you in the last 24 hours, such as a text answer, an image, or a document.
  • Utility templates. Approved order updates and similar templates sent inside that same window.

The 24-hour window itself did not change, and customers can still message you for free. Marketing and authentication messages are billed as before.

Who Pays for WhatsApp Business Messages and Who Doesn't

The charges apply to the WhatsApp Business Platform, the API that connects WhatsApp to chatbots, CRMs, and support tools. The regular WhatsApp app and the free WhatsApp Business app are not affected.
You are likely affected if:

  • A chatbot or AI agent sends your replies through the API
  • Your support team uses a helpdesk connected to WhatsApp
  • A provider set up your WhatsApp Business account for you

If you only use the free app on your phone, your costs stay the same.

How the 1,000 Free WhatsApp Messages Work

Each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages per month. Charges start at message 1,001. The allowance resets every month and does not roll over.

  • A business sending 400 replies a month may pay nothing
  • A business sending 10,000 pays for about 9,000

How Much Does a WhatsApp Service Message Cost?

There is no single price. The rate depends on where your customer is located, not where your business is. The same 5,000 replies can cost very little in one country and far more in another. Three things to keep in mind when you estimate:

  • Meta charges per message, not per conversation. Five short replies cost five times as much as one.
  • Your provider may charge on top. Meta's fee and your chatbot, CRM, or provider fee are separate.
  • Rates can change. Check Meta's published rate card for your markets instead of relying on a figure from an article, this one included.

What Is Still Free on WhatsApp Business

  • Messages your customers send to you
  • Your first 1,000 service messages each month
  • Replies inside the 72-hour window after a customer starts a chat from a Click to WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page button

Keep a Payment Method on Your WhatsApp Account

Meta said that businesses using the API directly, or through a provider, with no payment method on file by September 30, 2026 would stop having service messages delivered once charging began. If you connect through the API, open your WhatsApp Business Account settings and confirm a payment method is attached. If a provider handles billing for you, ask them to confirm.

How to Estimate Your WhatsApp Business Costs

  1. Find the service messages you sent last month, per business phone number.
  2. Subtract 1,000.
  3. Multiply the remainder by the rate for your customers' country.
  4. Repeat for each country you sell in and add the totals.

Your provider's dashboard shows the message counts for step 1, and Meta's pricing calculator covers step 3.

5 Ways to Lower Your WhatsApp Business Costs

  1. Send fewer, fuller replies. One clear answer beats four fragments.
  2. Answer the whole question the first time. A reply that resolves the request saves the follow-up message.
  3. Use Click to WhatsApp ads where they fit. Chats that start there get 72 free hours.
  4. Cut needless updates. Not every status change needs its own message.
  5. Review your automated flows. A chatbot that sends a greeting, a confirmation, and a reminder as separate messages multiplies your bill.

How an AI Agent Helps Control WhatsApp Costs

Per-message pricing rewards replies that are accurate and complete the first time. An AI agent can answer with the product, price, and delivery details in one message instead of a back-and-forth.
Fika's WhatsApp Agent replies to customers in their own language, keeps a record of each conversation, and sets follow-up reminders. With that history in one place, you can see which chats are active and which question keeps coming back, then improve that answer so it stops costing you repeat messages.

A Quick Checklist to Audit Your WhatsApp Costs

  1. Confirm whether you use the WhatsApp Business Platform or the free app.
  2. Check that a payment method is attached to your WhatsApp Business Account.
  3. Pull last month's service message count for each phone number.
  4. Look up the current rate for each country you serve.
  5. Review your chatbot or agent replies and merge any that can be one message.
  6. Repeat the check every quarter, since rates and volumes change.
